You can rewrite and rephrase the same sentence again and again in the elusive hope it will read well enough to grab the attention of agents and editors. Here’s a snippet from my review:Īnyone who has ever attempted to write fiction will know how important– and agonisingly difficult-your opening line is to write. Funnily enough, I was reading the novel around the same time I interviewed the novelist Craig McDonald, and he discussed at length the influence Crumley had on his writing. Sughrue about five years ago, and it was wonderful to revisit the character to review the novel for Shotsmag. I first read about the exploits of Crumley’s endearingly amoral private detective C.W. The 1978 publication of The Last Good Kiss was a turning point not only in the career of its author James Crumley but also in the crime genre itself. ![]() ![]() ![]() Many critics and reviewers have hailed the comics of Chris Ware as a form of modernist cultural practice, with comparisons being made to canonical modernist writers such as James Joyce, Franz Kafka, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, John Dos Passos and Gertrude Stein.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I perused some of his scholarly articles published in evangelical journals and was shocked to see the same polytheistic opinion published by “conservative” evangelical journals. is from University of Madison, which is a liberal campus, even by secular standards. I was unsure if what he was stating was his actual opinion or if he was slanting it toward the liberal view since his Ph.D. First, I read his doctoral dissertation on the topic, which presented a polytheistic view of the Bible. This turned my attention to the work of Michael Heiser. Being aware of an “angelic” interpretation of Psalm 82, I planned to study the view to determine whether I could be persuaded that the “human rulers” position was wrong. While working on a commentary for Psalm 1, I was planning to write an excursus on the how the phrase “counsel” and “sitteth in the seat” carry a conceptual parallel to Psalm 82. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I know this may be hard to believe, but the romance wasn’t even my favorite part about the book. The romance is slow-burn in the best sense, because it wasn’t until halfway through the book that Calla (and myself) began to change her mind about him. It took a really long time for me to warm up to him (and to be honest there are still some aspects about him I’m not a fan of mainly how he speaks about women who enjoy dressing up and wearing makeup), so I can easily imagine how Calla must have been feeling. And I say that because I really, really hated the love interest, Jonah, for the good beginning of the book. It’s refreshing to read a hate-to-love story that actually encompasses that hate aspect. The Simple Wild was an emotional, poignant, heart-wrenching story that took me completely by surprise.I honestly could not tell you the last time I cried this hard reading a book. While that pretty much sums up the romantic subplot, this book is so much more than that. Somehow I was led to believe that The Simple Wild was a cute hate-to-love romcom about a city girl moving to the middle of nowhere and falling for the grumpy small town love interest similar to It Happened One Summer. ![]() ![]() ![]() To say that Italy-the land of fine wines, extremely small cars, and football americano-holds a few surprises for Rick Dockery would be something of an understatement.
